Paul Nicholas Whelan, born on March 5, 1970, is a former United States Marine with multiple citizenships, including Canadian, British, Irish, and American. After his service in the Marines, Whelan worked as the head of global security for BorgWarner, an automotive parts supplier.

Arrest and Imprisonment

In December 2018, Whelan was arrested in Moscow on charges of espionage. He was subsequently convicted and sentenced to 16 years in prison. Whelan consistently denied the charges and maintained his innocence throughout his detention.

Release and Return

After four years of imprisonment, Whelan was released from Russia in a prisoner swap for Viktor Bout, a Russian arms dealer held in the United States. His return was a long-awaited and joyous event for his family and supporters.
