British Labour leader Keir Starmer called on Sunday for a lasting ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and said the fighting must stop now.

In a speech detailing the Labour Party's position on the conflict in the Middle East, Starmer said that the party "unequivocally condemns" the violence and loss of life in Gaza.

He said that the party supports the right of Israel to defend itself, but that this must be done in a proportionate and responsible manner.

Starmer also called for an end to the blockade of Gaza and for a political solution to the conflict that addresses the root causes of the violence.

The Labour leader has been under pressure in his party to take a more critical stance on Israel's bombardment of Gaza.

A number of Labour MPs have called for an immediate ceasefire and for the party to condemn Israel's actions.

However, Starmer has said that he believes that a ceasefire is the only way to end the violence and that the party should not take sides in the conflict.
