Simon Yates Takes a Pay Cut to Join Visma | Lease a Bike: "Just Wants to Be Part of the Best Team"
Yates, who won the Vuelta a Espana in 2018, has signed a two-year deal with the Norwegian team after leaving BikeExchange-Jayco at the end of last season.
The 30-year-old Briton has taken a significant pay cut to join Visma | Lease a Bike, but he says he is not motivated by money and just wants to be part of a winning team.
“I’m not here for the money,” Yates said. “I’m here to win bike races. I believe this is the best team for me to do that.”
Yates is one of the most successful Grand Tour riders of his generation, having won the Vuelta a Espana in 2018 and finished on the podium of the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia.
However, he has struggled for form in recent seasons, and he left BikeExchange-Jayco at the end of last year after a disappointing season.
Visma | Lease a Bike is one of the strongest teams in the world, and Yates is confident that he can rediscover his best form with the Norwegian team.
“I’m really excited to be joining Visma | Lease a Bike,” Yates said. “I think this is the best team in the world, and I’m confident that I can win bike races with them.”
Yates will make his debut for Visma | Lease a Bike at the Tour de France in July.
